The first thing that strikes you about Maudrie Swaby-Rose is her smile, exuding warmth and welcome to guests checking into the Hilton Kingston hotel.
As a room attendant, she is that critical element which makes the stay comfortable and memorable.
"I love to take care of people and try to make them happy," says Swaby-Rose, who has been employed to the Hilton Kingston since 1998.
She grew up in Salmon Town in the parish of South Manchester, was a middle-distance runner and wanted to make a career in athletics, but fate had something else in store for her. "When I went to school, the track-and-field scholarships were on hold, so it was all about academics," she recalls.
Swaby-Rose is considered to be one of the drivers of the Housekeeping Department. She goes about her duties with energy and smile that melts everyone she comes into contact with.
"I try to make the stay of the guests as comfortable as possible," she says. Once, she recalls, she got wind of the birthday of one the guests staying on her floor, and decided to throw a surprise. "I went to my supervisor and got a slice of cake for the guest, with a candle and kept it in the guest's room," she said.
It is this personal touch that has left a lasting impression on many guests. "There are guests who ask for rooms on the eighth floor," said a proud Maudrie, with a touch of humility.
She is a department trainer in the Housekeeping Department. Her appointment is due mainly to her demonstration of quality service throughout her tenure.
"I believe that we must make the guests special because, if we don't, they will not come back and they are the reason we have our jobs," she said.
She currently resides with husband Carl and daughters Nikeisha, 17 and Shanika, 12 in Duhaney Park.
Her elder daughter has her sights on becoming a chef, "I am fully supporting her to pursue her dreams and want her to succeed," says Maudrie.
She is an active member of Duhaney Park New Testament Church. "I encourage people to follow their dreams and also give them lessons on good housekeeping and hygiene."
Swaby-Rose has been rewarded for her exemplary work, being presented with the Hilton Service Star award and the Spirit of Hilton for 2009, to name a few.
She is happy to be a part of the industry, "I want to grow in this field and motivate others who come to work here," she says.
