“We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility, ” said Rabindranath Tagore, Indian Poet, Playwright and Essayist and winner of Nobel Prize for Literature, words that Jason Miller, a Runaway Bay HEART Hotel and Training Institute graduate emulates.

Miller is a "small town" boy from Snow Hill, Portland coming from humble background. “I come from a very poor family,” Miller said, “I was going down the misguided track and was idling, but then I reminded myself that I have to achieve something in life.”

For him, the hospitality sector was an obvious choice, as he found that his mind-set to help and assist others could translate into good customer service and give him a chance to pursue his dreams.

MISPLACED PERCEPTIONS
After leaving Wolmer’s Boys High School in Kingston, he decided to join HEART Runaway Bay, but, he recalled, this was met with opposition; but he went against the general perception.

“It is a general perception that HEART is for losers,” he said, “I was told that I should concentrate on going to the university than taking up a vocational training.”

Coming to HEART was a revelation, there were students with subjects, and some of them had first degrees. This was a stepping stone for the 22-year-old, who felt the calling and went on the path to realise his dreams.

During the year that he spent at Runaway Bay, Miller not only exhibited high standards in his training, but also went the extra mile to help fellow students, whenever the need arose.

He selflessly tutored a class of ten students who had failed the exams, preparing them for their assessments; this he did at nights after classes, foregoing his recreational, rest and study time.

Miller, not only graduated with “flying colours”, but was the valedictorian, an honour he acknowledged with humility. “This is a momentary pause on the road to success,’’ he said in his valedictory speech.

MORE SUCCESSES, TRIALS TO GO
“We have come through so many trials, failures and successes and believe it or not we have so many more to go through,” he reminded fellow graduates.

Miller received an undergraduate Associate Degree scholarship to Western Hospitality Institute and has now been awarded another scholarship to pursue his bachelor’s degree.

The Director of HEART TRUST has expressed desire for him to be a part of an outreach programme with inner-city youths.

He has his sights set on becoming a tourism educator and food & beverage manager. “I want to impart whatever I learnt to others,” Miller said.

He recalls what his instructor said, “always offer the opportunity to someone else, let them do with it what they choose, never let it be said that you never gave someone the chance.”
